The wonders of Chemistry!

Hello and welcome to my absoulutly fascinating website on the marvels of the chemistry that we can experience in the world today!

A periodic table

How the table works

The periodic table is a method of organising all the elements that we have found. when it was created it was special because it was the first model taht left room for elements that the creator knew must be there but had not yet been discovered. This also allowed him to redicct the properties these undiscovered elements would have. When those elements were eventually discovered it was found that the predictions made were all extremely acurate. The way it is set up is that each vertical column (called a group) each contains the same number of electrons in its outer shell. This causes them to have simlar reactions as well as a trend in physical properties. Then each horizontal row (called a period) contains elements that differ by 1 electron in each element next to it.

Group 1

The group 1 metals

Group 1 is the most left hand column on the periodic table, these elements are all extremely reactive as they only have 1 electron in the outer shell meaning to become stable all they need to do is react this one electron. This allows them to react easily with both oxygen in the air and even water! When they do react with water as you go down the group each element reacts more vigourously than the last. For example sodium sparks and forms a ball on the surface when placed in water. However, when pottasium is exposed to water it bursts into a lilac flame as well as shooting across the surface. One thing to note is that although hydrogen is displayed above these elements it itself does not exibhit any of these traits.
